Steel Column Fabricator & Supplier
SV Steel is a steel column fabricator and supplier for commercial construction across London and the South East. We fabricate universal columns (UC), hollow-section columns (SHS, RHS and CHS) and built-up columns in grade S355, with base plates and connections, to your structural engineer's drawings, to BS EN 1090-1, Execution Class 2 (EXC2).
What we make
- Universal columns (UC) for multi-storey and single-storey frames
- Square, rectangular and circular hollow-section columns (SHS, RHS, CHS)
- Built-up and cruciform columns for heavier loads
- Base plates, cap plates, cleats and stiffeners welded and drilled to your drawings
- Grade S355 steel, fabricated to BS EN 1090-1 Execution Class 2 (EXC2)
Columns carry the whole frame down to the foundations, so their fabrication and base connections have to be right. We weld base plates, cap plates and cleats under an audited Execution Class 2 process, so columns arrive with the holing and connections your steel needs. Fabricated alongside your beams as one package.

Steel Columns: common questions
- What types of steel column do you fabricate?
- We fabricate universal columns (UC), structural hollow-section columns (square SHS, rectangular RHS and circular CHS) and built-up or cruciform columns for heavier loads, in grade S355. Send your column schedule or drawings and we'll confirm against your sizes.
- Do you weld base plates and connections to the columns?
- Yes. We weld and drill base plates, cap plates, cleats and stiffeners to your engineer's connection design, so each column arrives ready to set out and bolt down. Holding-down bolt patterns are worked from your drawings.
- UC or hollow-section columns, which should I use?
- Universal columns suit most building frames and connect easily to beams; hollow sections (SHS, RHS, CHS) are stiffer for their weight and are often chosen where the column is exposed. Your structural engineer specifies the section and we fabricate to it.
- What grade and standard are your columns?
- Columns are grade S355 as standard (S275 where specified), fabricated to BS EN 1090-1, Execution Class 2 (EXC2), and CE marked under an audited factory production control certificate.
- Do you supply columns with the matching beams?
- Yes. Columns, beams and connections are fabricated together as one package at our works in Denham, West London, and delivered across London and the South East, sequenced to your erection programme.
